MCI Directs Doctors to Prescribe Only Generic Drugs

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has advised ensuring the medical practitioners that there is rational prescription and utilization of medications, failing which “strict disciplinary action” will be taken in the event that they neglect to adhere to it arranges.

The country’s apex medical regulator has cautioned the doctors of action in the event that they neglect to adhere to its guideline on prescribing the medications just in non generic names and writing prescriptions legibly.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has also requested that the medical practitioners to ensure that there is rational prescription and utilization of medications, failing which “strict disciplinary action” will be taken in the event that they neglect to adhere to it orders.

The MCI reiterated its 2016 directive; few days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed on setting up a legitimate system to ensure that the doctors recommend low cost generic medicines to the patients.

the MCI had amended the condition 1.5 of the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, it has requested that the medical community to follow its 2016 notification in which, 2002 mandating the doctors to prescribe drugs by generic names in place of brand names.

Recently in Surat, while launching a multi- speciality hospital, Modi had said that the doctors write prescriptions such that the poor people don’t understand their handwriting and they wind up purchasing drugs from the private stores at high costs.

“All the registered medical practitioners under the IMC Act are directed to agree to the previously mentioned provisions of the regulations without fail,” said the MCI round, issued to the Deans, Principals of Medical Colleges, Directors of all the hospitals, Presidents of all State Medical Councils.

The government is also revising the National List of Essential Medicines of 2015 to include more drugs. The Jan Aushadhi program, under which the government gives essential medicines at reasonable rates at specially established shops, is additionally being strengthened.
